For employers
Hiring advice
Practical tips to help you write better adverts, run fair interviews and help new starters settle in.
Write a clear job advert
- Start with the job title people actually search for.
- Explain what the person will do day to day.
- Separate essential skills from nice-to-haves.
- Include pay, hours, location and working pattern.
- Use plain, inclusive language and avoid jargon.
- Avoid wording linked to age, sex or other protected characteristics, such as "young" or "energetic".
Run fair, useful interviews
- Agree the criteria before you meet anyone.
- Ask every candidate the same core questions.
- Use questions that ask for real examples.
- Make a note of your scores and reasons straight after each interview.
- Offer reasonable adjustments for disabled candidates.
- Give every candidate feedback or an update, even if it's a no.
Checks before day one
This is general guidance, not legal advice.
- Right to work: You must check that every new employee can legally work in the UK before they start. See GOV.UK for the current rules.
- References and any role-specific checks, such as DBS where the role requires it.
- A written statement of employment particulars, due on or before the first day.
Help new starters settle in
- Send key details before day one: start time, place, dress code and who to ask for.
- Have equipment and log-ins ready.
- Plan the first week, including introductions and training.
- Book regular check-ins during the first few months.
