For candidates
Changing career
Moving into a new role or sector takes planning, but you're rarely starting from zero. Here's how to make the move with confidence.
Start with what you want
- What do you enjoy most in your current or past work?
- What would you like to do less of?
- Which working pattern and location suit your life?
- What salary do you need, now and in a year or two?
Spot your transferable skills
Many skills move with you: organising work, dealing with customers, using spreadsheets, managing budgets, solving problems and working in a team. List examples from your own experience and match them to the roles you're aiming for.
Fill any gaps
- Look at several job adverts for the role you want and note the common requirements.
- Short courses, online learning or volunteering can help you gain missing skills.
- Some fields have recognised qualifications, such as AAT for finance or CIPD for HR.
Update your CV for the move
Lead with a short profile that explains the change and why you're suited to it. Put your most relevant skills and examples near the top. Our CV advice page has more tips.
Consider a stepping stone
A temporary or contract role can be a practical way to gain experience in a new sector before committing to a permanent move.
