For candidates
Temporary and contract work
Flexible roles for busy periods, projects and cover. A good way to gain experience, try a new workplace or work around other commitments.
How temporary work works
A temporary assignment fills a gap for a set period, such as a busy season, a project or cover for someone on leave. A contract role is usually for a fixed term and may be longer. Each vacancy explains the expected length, hours, location and pay before you apply.
Why people choose temporary work
- Flexibility around study, family or other plans
- Experience across different workplaces and sectors
- A chance to show what you can do, which can sometimes lead to a permanent role
- A quick way back into work after a break
From application to first day
- Apply for a role through the Job Board.
- We check your availability and suitability.
- You confirm the assignment terms in writing before you start.
- You get the start time, place and who to report to.
- Tell us early if anything changes, such as hours or availability.
Know your rights
Temporary workers in the UK have rights, including paid holiday and the National Minimum Wage. Agency workers also gain the right to the same basic pay and conditions as comparable staff after 12 weeks in the same role. Check GOV.UK for full details. This is general information, not legal advice.
Make the most of each assignment
- Keep your availability up to date in your account.
- Be on time and ask questions early.
- Ask for feedback at the end of each assignment.
